The FireFit Task Group was originally developed through the support of the Federal Fire and Aviation Safety Team (FFAST) and listed under the Safety and Health Working Team (SHWT) in 2003 after multiple efforts to raise awareness to the importance of wildland firefighter fitness and wellness. The Task Group ensured representation from every interagency wildland fire agency and from each wildland firefighting resource. It is the objectives of the Task Group to ensure that every fire resource in each of these agencies is represented and provided this information. Please contact your respective representative as needed.

The Task Group works closely with the Missoula Technology and Development Center (MTDC) in their ongoing efforts in firefighter health, fitness, and safety.

As of 2010, the organization structure has changed under the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) so that the FireFit Task Group is under the Preparedness Branch Committee under NWCG.
