Wildland Firefighters Monument - Description
Welcome
The Wildland Firefighters Monument is a tribute and honor to all wildland firefighters and the people who support them - past, present, and future. Enjoy a tranquil visit to this one-acre natural landscape, through which winds a ribbon-shaped walkway. Follow the sound of a waterfall as you enter a blanket of native flowers, grasses, trees, and shrubs. Experience a mosaic of sunlight and shadow. Share in the heartfelt expressions left by others who have passed this way before you.
History
The Wildland Firefighter Foundation sought a special way to recognize firefighters after the loss of 14 lives during the 1994 South Canyon Fire. The Foundation partnered with the National Interagency Fire Center to pursue creation of a monument. Generous donations and tireless work of countless volunteers transformed a section of parking lot into a peaceful park. The Monument was officially dedicated in a ceremony on May 25, 2000. Management
The Monument is cooperatively managed by the Wildland Firefighter Foundation and the member agencies of the National Interagency Fire Center. Oversight is the responsibility of an interagency team. Year-round care is accomplished through the combined efforts of staff, local volunteers, and visitors according to an annual maintenance schedule. The next maintenance day for the site is Wednesday, May 7, 2008 from 10:00 am until noon.
Sculptures and Waterfall
Three eight-foot bronze firefighters were created by a sculptor from the National Park Service. They stand in silent testimony to hard-working men and women on the fireline. A waterfall constructed by a team of volunteers showcases native rock gathered from a local quarry by the Boise Smokejumpers.
Commemorative Markers
Inscribed granite stones line the Monument walkways and encircle its perimeter to commemorate members and supporters of the wildland firefighting community. These markers are authorized and placed twice a year at the request of individuals by the National Interagency Fire Center and the Wildland Firefighter Foundation. To request a marker click here.
