Interagency Smoke Management

This website serves as a resource for providing current smoke management information pertaining to responsible wildland fire and prescribed fire management actions.

Fire has a prominent and natural role in many of our nation's ecosystems. As an ecological process, fire is used today by fire management practitioners to both restore the health of ecosystems as well as maintain ecosystems at a desired condition. With fire comes smoke which can and must be carefully and responsibly managed in fire management actions.

As a decomposition process, fire produces combustion byproducts that are harmful to human health and welfare. Both the ecological benefits as well as the public health and welfare effects from wildland fire smoke are well documented. The challenge of using fire to support the National Fire Plan is balancing both America's natural public lands and public interest.
