SPOTlights

ArcFuels

ArcFuels automates data manipulation in the SPOTS process by linking FVS-FFE, SVS, FARSITE, FlamMap, Nexus within ArcMap. The ArcFuels macros also link the fire and fuel models to desktop databases and spreadsheet software. ArcFuels expedites the application of fuel and fire behavior models for wildfire analysis and landscape planning of fuel treatments.

Alder Springs Carbon Study

The USDA Forest Service's Pacific Southwest Research Station is conducting an interesting and innovative study that seeks to explore carbon sequestration and offsets linked to fuel reduction treatments on the Mendocino National Forest in California. For more information see the linked USDA news brief.

What's New in SPOTS

The Coordinated Resource Offering Protocol (CROP) program inventories forest resources (including saw timber and biomass). This encourages local private sector business investments that utilize excess biomass from our restoration and hazardous fuel reduction stream. The aim is to create viable, sustainable markets for excess forest biomass (such as in the production of electricity) that also serve to help fund hazardous fuel treatment projects. Click here for more information on the CROP assessment program and how it relates to SPOTS.
