The Great Basin Cache (GBK) maintains 10 National Fire Equipment System (NFES) 9069 Mobile Cache Support Vans. The NFES 9069 is an enhanced version of the national standard NFES 2069 Mobile Cache Support Van, designed to meet the initial support needs of Great Basin Type 2 or larger incidents for one to two operational periods. Acceptable use outside these parameters is determined by the affected unit Fire Management Officer (FMO) and supporting Great Basin Coordination Center Manager, with input from GBK.

Vans owned by GBK remain in their pre-designated field locations, except for time spent supporting incidents and undergoing refurbishment in Boise following an incident assignment, and as necessary during the off season for maintenance and total refurbishment. All cache vans that have been returned to Boise for winter maintenance/refurbishment are returned to pre-designated field locations prior to June 15 each year.

Questions About Mobile Cache Support Vans

How can I order and use a GBK van?

Prior to committing a cache van, a Supply Resource Order request must be place by the local dispatch to the appropriate coordination center. Unless directed otherwise by the coordination center, units hosting a pre-positioned van will fill local incident requests with that van. In all cases, a copy of the Resource Order will be faxed to GBK by the appropriate coordination center, regardless if the van is filled locally or out of Boise. In addition, the van identification number and/or location in which the van was mobilized from needs to be included under Resourced Assigned in Block 12 of the Resource Order before faxing the order to GBK.

Upon arrival at the incident, the van should be unloaded in anticipation of retrieval by GBK so that it can be returned to Boise and made ready for re-use. For planning purposes, teams can expect GBK to retrieve a committed GBK cache van within 24-36 hours of commitment. Any deviation from this procedure will require appropriate Great Basin Coordination Center Manager approval for each occurrence, with input from and timely notification to GBK. When determining date and time needed, ensure that appropriate lead time is allowed to have team personnel and/or agency representative in place at the delivery point to unload the contents.

All associated charges related to movement of the van (to incident, to GBK for rebuild, to assigned location) will be charged to the incident for which it was ordered. The incident host unit will be responsible for procuring tractors for moving the vans to an incident. This procurement may be coordinated with GBK (to arrange for a GBK tractor), or through local resource channels (i.e. agency tractor, local hire).

Replacement of committed GBK cache vans will be automatically performed by GBK. A Resource Order in NOT required for replacement vans. Vans will be pre-positioned at the same location from which a van was dispatched from, unless the coordination centers advise otherwise.

Security and protection from damage to a cache van and its contents is the responsibility of the unit in which the van is located. The vans and contents are to be used for incident support only, not for local projects. If seals are found broken and/or items found missing, the cost of replacement for missing items will be charged to the appropriate unit’s preparedness funding.

How can I order additional cache vans or change assigned locations?

A unit desiring a cache van, an additional cache van or change in assigned pre-season location should coordinate with all of the interagency cooperators in the affected area. Requests must be approved by the Great Basin Operations Committee prior to May 1 of each year. Requesting unit needs to be aware that there may be costs associated with the request (transportation). Once the request is approved, the unit will then submit a resource order through the appropriate coordination center.

Additional cache vans can be built as needed in response to fire activity, and will be ordered through the appropriate Great Basin Coordination Center.
