📌Released today, here's the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for May through August 2024. Very important release for your awareness from Predictive Services as warm summer months are approaching. Fire ... activity slowly increased across the western geographic areas in the US in April, but remained at very low levels, while fire activity in the Eastern and Southern Areas decreased. Year-to-date annual acres burned for the US is well above the 10-year average at 240% of normal, primarily due to late February’s fire outbreak in the panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma that burned over a million acres, but the national year-to-date tally of wildfires remains below average, near 76%. It's already May? We can't believe it either. This means it's the start of National Wildfire Awareness Month. Preparation and fire management at NIFC is the year-round focus, but it's that time of year where the weather is ... getting warmer, our wildland vegetation is beginning to dry out and everyone should be thinking and acting on #Preparedness for the coming months. Whether this is preparing your home by cleaning up debris from your roof and gutter or committing to recreating responsibly while enjoying a camping trip, there's a role for everyone. Let's all do our part this #FireYear2024 so our wildland firefighters and support personnel can focus efforts on responding to naturally caused fires. #NationalWildfireAwarenessMonth 📸 Photo by Hannah Branz, on the Hayden Fire on the Salmon-Challis National Forest.

Incident Meteorologists are critical to responses on wildfires. When working on an incident, their day is spent making specialized weather forecasts for the area and briefing decision-makers so wildfire managers and fire ... responders can successfully and safely contain fires. Take a look at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) post to get a closer look at the work they do. #ItTakesAllOfUs

Happening now, the Idaho Department of Insurance along with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners Western Zone and the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety - IBHS is hosting a Wildfire Risk Forum at NIFC. ... The forum is intended to educate and inform western policymakers on the impact of wildfire on the built environment and insurance markets. Joining the group today was Governor Brad Little, where he spoke before the attendees and signed a proclamation declaring May as National Wildfire Awareness Month in Idaho. Following this proclamation came a demonstration burn where there was a side-by-side look at fire behavior showing the importance of immediate defensible space around your home. Curious just how important defensible space is? Take a look at this time-lapse video. Thank you to the Boise Fire Department and the Idaho State Fire Marshal's Office for assisting and making this demonstration burn possible today. #WildfireAwareness #Preparedness #FireYear2024 📸Video Credit: Rebecca Paterson, BLM

Welcome to the Nation's Logistical Support Center

Support Center

The nation’s federal wildland fire community is a large and complex organization across the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs; and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service. These agencies manage wildland fire on nearly 700 million acres of federal public land, or one-fifth of the total land area in the United States.

NIFC is home to the national fire management programs of each federal fire agency, along with partners including the National Association of State Foresters, the U.S. Fire Administration, and the National Weather Service. A Department of Defense liaison was added as a permanent partner at NIFC in 2008. Working together, these partners provide leadership, policy oversight and coordination to manage the nation’s wildland fire programs.

In recent years, the role of the agencies at NIFC has grown to include all types of fire management, including hazardous fuels treatments, integrated fire and land-use planning, and more. Fire management under this larger umbrella is designed to achieve not only suppression goals, but to accomplish a broad spectrum of natural resource objectives, and do so in an efficient, cost-effective manner.
