May 30, 2025

As of today, there are nine large wildfires under full suppression strategies and one under a strategy other than full suppression, across five geographic areas. 27,733 fires have been reported in 2025 thus far, for a total acreage of 1,146,230. This is above the 10-year averages of 20,850 fires and 1,151,434 acres.

Fuels and fire behavior advisories are in place for southeast Arizona and the White Mountains/Gila Region and southcentral New Mexico Mountains. For a look at predicted fire risk through August 2025, see the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook

The National Firefighter Registry for Cancer is active and accepting participants. Participation is voluntary but important. The data gathered helps determine firefighter cancer risk and could directly influence future coverage, safety protocols, and support systems for the wildland fire community. This is for all current or former firefighters, not only those who have or have had cancer. Join the registry or learn more.

As we move into the summer, many of us are excited to get outside and enjoy our public lands. Protect these special places by holding yourself and your group to high standards of fire awareness and safety. Put out campfires by dousing them with water, stirring the coals with a shovel, and repeating. Your campfire should be cool to the touch before you leave the area or go to sleep. Set a good example and teach your children good campfire safety practices.

Stay safe, stay aware, and thank you for doing your part. Let’s make this fire year one of resilience, responsibility, and respect for the land we love. Explore the 2025 National Fire Year Themes and learn how we’re working together to create a safer, more fire-adapted future.

Weather

Hot, well above normal temperatures are expected across California into much of the West through Saturday along with low minimum relative humidity of 5-20%. Isolated mixed wet and dry thunderstorms will develop near and west of the Divide in New Mexico into eastern Arizona, with potential new ignitions Friday and Saturday. Breezy westerly Cascade Gap winds gusting to 50 mph will develop on the east slopes of the Cascades into the Columbia Basin creating areas of elevated to critical conditions Saturday. Cooler temperatures are expected across the northern half of the West Sunday as a cold front moves through. Farther south, an upper-level low with tropical moisture will move into the Southwest with widespread showers and thunderstorms Sunday, while scattered wet thunderstorms are expected in southern California. Dry and breezy northwest winds will develop in the Upper Midwest today, followed by very dry conditions with minimum relative humidity as low as 10% for the weekend, but winds will diminish. Showers and thunderstorms are expected from the Appalachians to the East Coast today, followed by drier conditions for the weekend. A drier trend is expected across Alaska, but temperatures are expected to remain near normal.
