Firefighters

Firefighters work the fireline at night on the Green Fire in California.
Helitack crewmember works on a sling load on the Nenana Ridge Fire in Alaska.
Firefighters work on the Black Swamp Fire in North Carolina.

Wildland firefighters are highly trained professionals who meet rigorous physical fitness standards to perform demanding work in challenging environments. They may serve on:

  • Hand crews – Build fireline using hand tools to stop a fire’s spread.

  • Engine crews – Use hoses and water to contain and extinguish flames.

  • Helitack crews – Fly by helicopter to reach fires quickly and deliver personnel, equipment, and supplies.

With experience, some firefighters join hotshot crews, tackling the toughest assignments on the fireline, or become smokejumpers, parachuting into remote areas to respond to new fires.

No matter the role, every type of crew works as part of a larger team to protect lives, property, and the natural landscapes we all value.
