Smokejumpers are wildland firefighters trained to reach remote fires by parachuting from about 3,000 feet above the ground. When wildfires ignite in locations without road or trail access, smokejumpers can arrive quickly, often hours before anyone could hike or drive to the fire, and begin initial attack.
This work is physically and mentally demanding, requiring broad firefighting knowledge and skill with a variety of aircraft. Beyond wildfire response, smokejumpers also assist with prescribed fire projects and hazardous fuels reduction.
All smokejumpers are experienced wildland firefighters. First-time “rookies” complete intensive training in parachuting, aircraft safety, and firefighting tactics, along with specialized skills like tree climbing, aerial cargo delivery, chainsaw use, parachute equipment manufacturing, and prescribed burning.
