March 1, 2024

The past week brought a lot of new fire activity, with 91 new large incidents, of which 63 have been contained. 80 of these incidents were in the Southern Area, including the Smokehouse Creek Fire in the Texas panhandle, which is currently measured at 1,075,000 acres after a period of rapid, wind-driven growth via spotting. In total, there were new large fires reported in Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Arkansas, Louisianna, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Montana, and Missouri.

Nationally, 402 fire personnel have been deployed in the past week, representing many state and federal agencies, although most of the nation's seasonal firefighting workforce has not yet come into service for 2024.  At this time, there are zero large fires nationwide being managed under a strategy other than full suppression.

    Weather

A strong storm will move through the West through this weekend, with breezy and dry conditions across the Desert Southwest. Heavy precipitation will affect northern and central California, with heavy snow and blizzard conditions in the Sierra, while moderate precipitation spreads across the northern two-thirds of the West. A series of weaker storms will bring periods of light to moderate precipitation to the northern half of the West next week, while the southern half of the West is breezy and dry. Breezy and dry westerly winds will affect the central and southern Plains to the Mid-Mississippi Valley this weekend, with the strongest winds Sunday and widespread elevated to critical conditions. Winds will continue across the Trans Pecos and Big Bend Monday. Dry and windy conditions are likely to return late next week for the southern High Plains. Two strong storms will bring moderate to heavy rain to much of the Southeast into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, the first today and tomorrow with another mid to late next week. Lighter precipitation is forecast for the northern Plains into the Great Lakes ealry next week, but much of the central and southern Plains is forecast to remain dry through mid-next week. Cold and generally dry conditions will continue for Alaska, while Hawai’i experiences moderate to strong trade winds and numerous showers for windward areas, with a few showers moving into leeward areas, especially early next week. National Predictive Services Outlook 6 Minutes for Safety: The 6 Minutes for Safety topic of the day is Developing a Learning Organization.
