Two large fires are currently being suppressed in Southern California. About 7,800 wildland firefighters and support personnel prepare for another day of potentially strong winds with gusts up to 60 to 80 miles per hour0. Please find the Eaton Fire on InciWeb and the Palisades Fire on the CALFIRE website for current information about these fires, including resources for those seeking or offering support after the devastating losses that have occurred there. A new fuels and fire behavior advisory has been issued by California's South Ops Coordination Center, covering the south coast and adjacent inland mountains.
Eight MAFFS C-130 airtankers and support personnel have been deployed to support wildland fire operations in Southern California. Canadian resources supporting these efforts include two airtankers from Quebec, two crews and two overhead personnel from Alberta, and one crew and one overhead personnel from British Columbia.
Homeowners and communities play a large role in fire safety. Take simple measures such as keeping streets and roads clear to fire engines can safely maneuver and residents can evacuate if needed. Make sure fire hydrants are visible and accessible. More importantly, clear flammable vegetation around structures, on large lots and along roadsides. These simple prevention measures can go along way toward reducing damages of fire to your home and community. Check out the Fire Adaptive Communities Learning Network for more information.
The National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook is available for the period of January through April 2025.
Moderate to strong northeasterly Santa Ana winds of 20-40 mph gusting to 60 mph will continue across southern California into the evening before weakening overnight as gusts fall to 30-40 mph. Dry conditions will continue across the rest of the West, with strong valley inversions. Very cold air will continue across the Great Lakes and Northeast, with below normal temperatures southward to the Gulf Coast, while temperatures begin to moderate in the central and northern Plains as a warm front moves through with light snowfall. A winter storm will move through the Gulf of Mexico, with snow from East Texas into the Southeast and rain in Florida. Lake effect snow will continue downwind of the Great Lakes, with the heaviest snow downwind of Lake Ontario. A strong storm will bring heavy snow to southwest Alaska into the western Interior, while rain spreads along the south coast. Dry conditions will continue across Hawai’i under light to moderate trade winds.
