July 4, 2025
Happy Fourth of July! Whether you're enjoying a backyard BBQ or heading into the hills, let’s keep the celebration safe. This holiday, swap sparklers for glow sticks and campfire stories for LED lanterns. One small spark can lead to a wildfire, but one smart choice can prevent it. Fireworks, campfires, target shooting, vehicles, and even grills can all pose a risk. Know before you go, follow local fire restrictions, and help us protect our landscapes and the people who call them home.
Today is also Day 5 of the Week of Remembrance, where we honor Michael “Mikey” Hallenbeck, who lost his life in 2015 after being struck by a falling tree on the Sierra Fire. His story reminds us that risk is always present, and that speaking up, checking in, and planning ahead are vital parts of every mission. Honor the fallen by applying the lessons learned. Read more here.
Across the country, five new large fires were reported, with 31 still uncontained and 66 being managed under a strategy other than full suppression. More than 7,300 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents nationwide, including one incident management team and 62 overhead personnel assisting with large fire support in Canada. This international collaboration is a reminder that fire knows no borders, and neither does our commitment to help where it’s needed most.
The 2025 National Fire Year Themes emphasize safety, innovation, shared responsibility, and connection. These values remind us that it truly takes all of us to face wildfires together and protect what we value for tomorrow.
Wildfire activity is increasing across several regions, with July bringing above normal potential in the Great Basin, Southwest, Northern Rockies, and parts of California and the Northwest. In southwest Utah, critically dry grasses and shrubs are fueling fast-moving fires. Learn more by checking out the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook and the Southwest Utah Advisory.
Scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms will be ongoing this morning across eastern Oregon and the northern Great Basin and become wetter as they move into central and western Montana this afternoon. Isolated mixed wet and dry thunderstorms will redevelop this afternoon in southeast Oregon and southwest Idaho. Breezy and dry southwest sustained winds 15-25 mph with gusts to 40 mph amid minimum relative humidity of 5-15% will develop across much of Nevada into western Utah and northwest Arizona creating widespread elevated to critical conditions. and portions of northern California once again. A more stable airmass will move into the Southwest, eastern Utah, and Colorado curtailing thunderstorm development, but relative humidity will remain elevated. Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected across the Upper Mississippi Valley today, with scattered thunderstorms into the central Plains. In Alaska, another day of hot, dry, and breezy conditions are expected across the Interior with maximum temperatures of 80-95°F, minimum relative humidity as low as 15%, and east winds of 10-18 mph.
